┆The magazine started as a community newsletter written by and for people in Norton Canon, Sarnesfield, Letton and Kinnersley; but its circulation was extended over time to include many other nearby parishes. From February 1983, it began to be circulated around the villages of Staunton-on-Wye, Monnington-on-Wye and Brobury as well. Moorhampton began to be included in the title from February 1984; Byford and Mansel Gamage from February 1990.
The name _The Signal_ was chosen by a reader in a competition announced in the first newsletter produced, and the name appeared on all the subsequent editions of the magazine.
More information about the origins and aims of the magazine can be found in the introduction to the first edition of April 1982, and also the February 1983 edition.
The magazine was started by the Marches Project, but subsequently continued independently.
