Construction of Hereford Sports and Leisure Centre
CL50/8
Series
The construction of Hereford Sports and Leisure Centre began in September 1984 on a patch of land adjacent to Hereford Racecourse and served by Holmer Road. The project was funded by Hereford City Council in collaboration with the Sports Council. When finished, the Centre provided a main hall with capacity for 12 badminton courts, which could be substituted for basketball, tennis, trampolining, volleyball, gymnastics and other indoor sports. Facilities also included four squash courts, a ‘Gym ‘n Tonic’ fitness room, a bar lounge, snack bar and viewing areas at the first floor.
This series of 35mm colour photographs chronicle the construction and inauguration of the Hereford Sports and Leisure Centre on Holmer Road; starting from the ceremonial digging of the first piece of sod in September 1984, to the eventual completion of the project in Spring 1985.
