Once the trunk road and inner city relief road had been made operational by late 1969, the Surveyor’s Department turned their attention towards the repair and pedestrianisation of roads in the city centre of Hereford. Eign Street was the first road to become fully pedestrianised in August 1970, following consultation with local business owners. Church Street soon followed suit, with attentions then turned to High Town. An inquiry was launched leading to an experimental prohibition of through traffic by May 1972, which was followed by a completed ban by 1974 (see CL50/7/1/1 for photograph of pedestrianisation of High Town). It would take more than a decade before further pedestrianisation affected St. Peter’s Street and Commercial Street (see CL50/7/1/2-16 for photographs of traffic congestion on these streets).
