Reginald Smith was born on the 23rd January 1866 and was the son of Charles Smith. He attended the schools of Highgate and Oundle and Emmanuel College Cambridge in 1885, receiving his BA in 1888. He was ordained Deacon in 1890 and as a Priest in 1891. He was Curate of Cleethorpes, 1890 – 1892, and Curate of St. Albans, Sneiton, Nottinghamshire, 1892 – 1894. He was Precentor and Assistant Priest at St. George’s Cathedral, Capetown, 1894 – 1897. He died on the 2nd January 1897 at Capetown.
