Whitbread Brewery was established in 1742 at Chiswell Street, London, where the Whitbread Archive was deposited until the beginning of 2001 when the archive was divided and deposited between relevant counties.
Between 1961 and 1971 Whitbread expanded through mergers and acquisition of businesses including, locally, the West Country Breweries, Stroud Brewery, Alton Court Brewery Company, Arnold Perrett & Co., Rhymney Brewery, and Hereford and Tredegar Brewery Ltd. The majority of this collection consists of the Alton Court Brewery records. The brewery was established in Ross in 1865 by Joseph Turnock (1821-1892), which he expanded from the Ross Ale and Porter Brewery of the 1840s in Brookend Street.
